The Dominican Republic and luxury have long been viewed as antonyms in a place where all-inclusives dominate the hotel space. The debut of Amanera, nestled on the remote north coast, marked the turning point for high-end tourism in the country. This region is sparsely populated and little known versus the East Coast’s Punta Cana.
Leading up to the December 2015 opening, questions lingered about the DR and Aman’s ability to change the face of tourism on the north coast. After all, this was a resort many years in the making, the brand’s first integrated golf resort and only its 2nd Caribbean property after Amanyara in the Turks & Caicos which opened 10 years prior. Could Aman create the first ultra-luxe resort to attract a new, more sophisticated traveler to this otherwise mass-market tourism destination?
